Transforming the Finance Function in government conference draws to a close. There were some very frank and open conversations across the two days. Some great presentations and panel discussions. Well done to Kieran Sloan as the compere.
The conference leaned towards discussing finance staff’s soft skills and ways to engage business, supporting cultural change across the organisation as well as the finance teams themselves. There were some frank and open conversations with both Panels and the attendees. Some informative presentations with several CFO’s experiences with implementing change as well as the difficulties of managing change.
The points I walked away with was that Finance staff need to accept that change is and will always be the new normal; communication (storytelling) and understanding the business, the audience is as important as the numbers (Kelvin Zhu – ATO & Geraldine Magarey – Chartered Accountants); leveraging new technologies such as RPA (digital automation) is still in its infancy and that Finance personnel need to be supported in seeing how these technologies can make their jobs easier to free their time up to engage and support the business units and managers more directly.
